President Obama Disses America

Conservatives have spent the last day or so having gleeful fits of rage over something outrageous the President said, as quoted in the new book from Bob Woodward.  It’s pretty damning.  Apparently, Obama was behind 9/11.  Oh wait, that’s not it.  He said:

“I said very early on, as a Senator and continue to believe, as a presidential candidate and now as president, that we can absorb a terrorist attack. We will do everything we can to prevent it. but even a 9/11, even the biggest attack ever, that ever took place on our soil, we absorbed it, and we are stronger. This is a strong, powerful country that we live in, and our people are incredibly resilient.”

This, for reasons that make no sense, it being described as rather dismissive.  Dismissive of what I am not sure.  Obama is accepting the possiblity that we could face another major terror attack.  And he is also stating his belief in the strength of America and it’s citizens.  That we could stand strong.

It might be a bit rosy, and appealing to the myth of a 9/12 atmosphere, as Glenn Beck might put it.  People seem to forget, in the days following 9/11, we had people pointing the finger at other Americans and claiming the attacks were there fault.  And hey, it is pretty hard to see how you can consider Feminists innocent of the attack on 9/11, right?

But seriously, as the comment stands, the only reason you could read a negative or dismissive attitude into the President’s words are that you hate him so much, you opt to willfully misread his comments.  The rest of his comments, in fact, show he is being anything but dismissive.

Then he addressed his big concern. “A potential game changer would be a nuclear weapon in the hands of terrorists, blowing up a major American city. Or a weapon of mass destruction in a major American city. and so when I go down on the list of things I have to worry about all the time, that is at the top, because that’s one area where you can’t afford any mistakes. And so right away, coming in, we said, how are we going to start ramping up and putting that at the center of a lot of our national security discussion? Making sure that that occurence, even if remote, never happens.”

He believes a terrorist attack the level of 9/11 is possible.  And that they (his administration) have to do everything they can to prevent such an incident.  This is logical and honest.  Conservatives should be cheering this statement on, but instead they are trying to make this out to be evidence that he isn’t taking a terrorist attack seriously.

But, just for fun, lets talk about dismissive…remember President Bush?  Remember when he said he did not give much thought to Osama Bin Ladin anymore?  Remember how he was responding to why we had not caught Osama?

  1. Well, between a nuclear Iran and an on-the-run Osama bin Laden, I wouldn’t necessarily give much thought to Osama bin Laden any more either.

In any case, the second quote you post here does indicate a *kind* of dismissiveness, inasmuch as Obama seems to think that it was he who “started” putting nuclear terrorism “at the center of a lot of our national security discussion”. Does he really not think that we were discussing that sort of thing in the Bush era?

  2. Actually, when Bush said thiat…it was six months after 9/11. Nobody was really focusing on a Nuclear Iran until a few years after the Iraq War.

Well, up until that point, it seemed it was more of a Cheney Scare Point. “Vote Republican or a dirty bomb could go off in the heartland!”

  3. The complete inability for some people to actually understand and comprehend both the written and spoken word is mind boggling.

On the other hand, when you have an agenda, I suppose that it is practically required to misunderstand.

  4. What’s funny is last night Olbermann showed a document from the Bush/Cheney Administration that talked about how they were trying to get things where the US could “Absorb another terrorist attack”

Seriously, the same exact phrase “Absorb a terrorist attack”.

Funny how it’s okay for one administration to use that phrase and no one says a word, and the next administration using the same word is somehow wishing terrorism to happen.

  5. Dismissive? You mean like responding to a memo stating that Bin Laden intends to attack the United States by saying “There, you’ve covered your ass now.” and ten going right back to your vacation like nothing happned? THAT kind of “dismissive”?
