Eating healthy is ridiculously expensive. Since last Wednesday? I have spent $90 on healthy foods. I have never spent $90 a week on food in the past. Ever. And people wonder why we have increasing obesity in this country. You know, being overweight is just plain cheaper.

I used to see a nutritionist, and I noticed that as well when she sent me to Bread and Circuses to get all the things she recommended. Whole lot of hippies and hipsters shelling out extra money for bad-tasting corn pasta.
I think that foods marketed specifically as “healthy” are probably going to cost extra just for the packaging alone. I mean, you don’t need to shell out big bucks for vegetables, and wheat bread and brown rice actually cost less than the white varieties. Plus the size of the portions you eat makes as much of a difference as what you eat.

It is annoying that healthy food is so expensive while unhealthy food is so cheap.
It makes some sense I guess but it’s horrible. :\ And it makes it harder for poor ppl to eat well.

Filby, I dunno what you’re experience has been, but where I shop a pound of apples is often more expensive than a pound of potato chips.
Ami, you hit the nail on the head. The price of truly healthy food makes it cost-prohibitive for poor people to enjoy a healthy diet. I’m betting it’s because highly processed foods are cheaper to produce. It’s unfortunate, though. Healthy eating is important for everyone (including people like me who are 70 lbs. overweight and need to shed some poundage).

Filby-In the long run, I am working toward portion control, but I am starting out spending a few days on a small base of foods, slowly working back into things other than the fruits, vegetables, salads and so on. The long term goal is to really learn portion control.
But all the healthy food I am referring to isn’t specialty stuff…I am talking apples, oranges, strawberries, grapes, rasberries, etc. Brown rice is cheap, but those other items, currently, are not. And you are right that “amount” matters, and one of the unfortunate realities is that most people don’t really know what portions are. Especially when eating out. Most places serve large portions. There is an Italian place nearby that serves such large portions, I can eat for a week on them.
