There is a new Podcast from Paul and Misty. I listened out of curiosity. Now, Misty talks about not listening to Ella Fitzgerald because she was a “blackie.” Was I bothered by this? Nope. Because in the context of what she was saying? I knew she most definitely did not approve. See, she related a story of doing hospice work. She was talking to an older woman about music…she asked if the woman had heard a particular song they were talking about as performed by Ella Fitzgerald. The woman said, (paraphrasing)”Why, no! She’s a blackie!”
And why am I not bothered by her relating the story? Why am I not parsing Misty’s words? Because she did not say, “I don’t necessarily agree…” She made it clear she did not disagree. She made a point to really emphasize it! She thought this woman’s words were awful. Fact is? Had she been this emphatic in her disagreement with the “fat and ugly” comment? There would be no issue from the past week.
