Tentacle Porn? (Link is not work friendly!)
On the cover of a comic supposedly appropriate for ages nine on up? People are alreadytalking boycott…and while I am not at the point of not buying anything Marvel, (I tend to prefer in rewarding the positive-not hurting the good to send a message about the bad) I can really understand the people who are ready to do that. Of course, I think DC is doing just as piss poor a job in how they treat women in their comics, and this is not any worse that what DC has offered us…but it’s equally insulting.
What’s going on in editorial that this cover was not seen as a bad idea? Come on Quesada and Co. This one should have been a no-brainer. Are you trying to get people to run like Forrest Gump away from your company? But then, as the sell out of the Mary Jane statue shows, Marvel isn’t really worried about what a fair number of readers think…as long as the fanboy dollar is there.
Why do you work so hard to alienate so many, big two?
Update: Heidi MacDonald over at the Beat gets a little more in depth.

Apparently the artist is a hentai artist that Marvel hired… so… we might get more?
>.>
I guess Marvel’s decided to get ahead of the curve and be forward thinking XD After all, if the trend continues, hentai WILL be the future of the comics industry XDDD
Really? I nixed it from Newsarama…I will have to fix that later…
What the hell is wrong with Marvel these days? Have they not an iota of sense?
Maybe I just have my fan-blinders on, but I don’t see this level of sexism coming from DC right now. There’s sexism, yes, but not to this degree.
Ami, The cover artist,Sana Takeda, is not a hentai artist. You should check out her website: sanatakeda.or.tv. Given the work the artist normally does, I have to wonder if she designed the cover or was dictated the cover by Marvel.
Filby,
I don’t know…I kind of feel like Marvel is getting hammered extra hard for DC’s continuous discretions. The MJ statue, for example, was not any more offensive than any of the DC statues that caused an uproar (see the Big Barda coat rack)…but those all had a much shorter life span. It seems like people are fed up with things, and Marvel has this one two punch that all came to a head.
DC had the Big barda Coat rack, the Star Sapphire debacle(Green Lantern 18), the “ame-figurines”, Sue Dibney’s rape and several sculpted busts just to name a few. The outrage at Marvel has actually often been aimed not at their portrayal of women in the past year, but rather the continual crossovers and lateness. I would actually have been far less shocked by the H4H cover if it had been a Supergirl cover. So, I think DC is overall a little worse, but this cover is like Marvel is feeling the need to play catch-up.
Okay, I see what you mean.
Geeeeeeeeeeez. I think we should all ask our comic retailers to tell their Diamond reps they are not pleased with this cover as well, just to see what happens when the shit rolls uphill.
I can somewhat understand the whole MJ cheesecake pose, not my thing, but there are bigger battles to fight, and this cover is one of them!
Oh ok. :O I read that she was..
Or at least she was known for doing some pornographic work
